| Speeds are low | Speeds are high |
| Unusual protection is required from the entrance of debris | Oiltight seals are readily employed |
| Simple bearing seals are desired | Bearing type is not suitable for grease |
| Operation for long periods without attention is desired | The bearing is lubricated from a central supply that is also used for other machine parts |
